Keeping Children Safe at Norbury Manor Primary School

At Norbury Manor Primary School, the safety and wellbeing of every child is our highest priority.

Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility. All staff, governors and adults working in our school have a responsibility to help keep children safe, recognise when a child may need help or protection, and take appropriate action.

Safeguarding includes providing help and support as soon as problems emerge, protecting children from harm both online and offline, supporting their health and development, and ensuring that children grow up in safe and caring circumstances.

We work closely with parents, carers and other professionals and agencies to ensure that concerns are identified and children and families receive the right support.

All members of staff receive safeguarding training and know how to report a concern. Our safeguarding team works with staff, families and external agencies to ensure that concerns are responded to appropriately.

If you are worried about the safety or wellbeing of a child, please tell us. You do not need to be certain that something is wrong before sharing a concern.

Our Approach to Safeguarding

We aim to create a school culture where children feel safe, listened to and confident that adults will help them.

Our safeguarding arrangements include:

• identifying and responding to concerns about abuse, neglect, exploitation or other forms of harm;
• working with parents, carers and external safeguarding agencies;
• listening to children and taking their views seriously;
• providing early help and support when difficulties emerge;
• safer recruitment and appropriate checks for adults working or volunteering in school;
• teaching children how to keep themselves and others safe, including online; and
• recognising that some children may be more vulnerable and may need additional support.

Children should know that there are trusted adults in school whom they can speak to if something is worrying them. Current statutory guidance emphasises listening to children, taking their views seriously and acting on what they tell adults.

Online Safety

Technology is an important part of children's learning and everyday lives. We teach pupils how to use technology safely, responsibly and respectfully and how to seek help if something online makes them worried or uncomfortable.

The school's internet access is filtered and monitored to help protect pupils from inappropriate or harmful online content. However, online safety is most effective when school and families work together.

We encourage parents and carers to talk regularly with their children about what they do online, the apps and games they use, who they communicate with and what they should do if they see or experience something that concerns them.

Preventing Radicalisation and Extremism

Safeguarding children from the risk of radicalisation and extremism forms part of our wider safeguarding responsibilities.

Through our curriculum, assemblies, PSHE and wider school life, pupils learn about democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance. These fundamental British values complement our school's own RESPECT values and our diverse school community.

Staff are trained to recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns, including concerns that a child may be vulnerable to radicalisation. Where concerns arise, we follow our safeguarding procedures and work with the appropriate external agencies.

We encourage pupils to think critically, respect the views and beliefs of others and understand that discrimination, hatred and intolerance have no place in our school community.

Working Together to Keep Children Safe

Safeguarding works best when children, families, school staff and other professionals work together.

If something does not feel right, please speak to us. We would always rather a concern was shared so that it can be considered appropriately.
