Norbury Manor Primary School

CALAT Family Learning Programme

The school ran a 17-week CALAT family learning programme from September 2018 for parents who wanted to gain basic English language skills. The course came to an end on Thursday 14th February 2019, and we celebrated with a bring and share brunch.

Ten parents from the school attended the course. The course ran every Thursday 9 – 11.00am, and gave parents an opportunity to learn English, both spoken and written supported by a tutor from CALAT.

At 11.00, the parents were joined by their children, and there was a fun half an hour activity to do as a family.

It was a very positive experience for everyone, and parents benefitted from the course in several ways.

Some parents gained confidence with spoken English; some parents used the course as a starting point for further classes, some non-English speaking parents were able to use the course as a way to begin to access English. Some parents excelled during the course and are going on to other CALAT courses which could lead to an English level 1 and 2 qualification.

The course also allowed parents and children to learn together and do activities together peacefully, away from the hustle and bustle of the home. It was lovely to see children encouraging and helping their parents do exercises, and having fun ‘teaching’ their adults!

The course will be running again for another 17 weeks beginning on Thursday 28th February 2019. Unfortunately, all the slots have been taken, but if you are interested in similar courses, details are available on the CALAT website.
